A new worm has hit Google’s Orkut and it seems to be hitting it pretty hard, it’s infected via the scrapbook feature and is adding hundreds of thousands of users, similar to the Myspace worm (Samy) that hit in October 2005.

It seems to be fairly unmalicious, more of a ‘look at me – see what I can do’ kind of thing. It’s certainly interested to see that social networking sites are beginning to be the focus of hackers, even if it’s not for money or stealing info..But more of a playground to test their skills.

A fast moving worm is squirming though Google’s Orkut social network, adding hundreds of thousands of users to an Orkut community created by a Brazilian hacker.

The worm, which first appeared on Dec. 19, has been spreading through Orkut’s Scrapbook system at a rapid pace, infecting more than 650,000 users in the space of a few hours.

According to an alert from anti-virus specialist Trend Micro, infection starts when an Orkut user is sent an e-mail telling them that they have a new Scrapbook entry.

I guess you can avoid it by not reading any scraps, or using something like NoScript – which would remove the danger of the JavaScript. But again it comes back to the same old thing, how many average users would even know what NoScript is?

Logging into Orkut, the victim is greeted with Portuguese-language text that reads: “2008 vem ai… que ele comece mto bem para vc.” This translates to “2008 is coming…I wish that it begins quite well for you”.

No interaction is necessary. Simply looking at the scrap starts the infection sequence,” says Trend Micro researcher Robert McArdle.

Once the scrap is viewed, it deletes itself and the victim is automatically added to the “Infectados pelo Vírus do Orkut” community.

Once a user becomes infected, the infected account downloads and executes an embedded Javascript that sends a copy of the original Scrapbook post to all the victim’s contacts.

But yes indeed, it shows the danger of allowing rich user content sanitizing it properly. Haven’t they learned their lessons from what happened at MySpace?

Google Map: Street View

Posted on February 13, 2008 by admin | No Comments

About every two months, Google Maps adds 6-7 new cities to Street View. In May 2007 the service was launched with images for 5 cities, two months later 4 new cities were added, in October Google added 6 cities, while in December a record of 8 cities were added to Street View.

This month, Google added 12 new cities from the US: Juneau (Alaska), Boise (Idaho), Salt Lake City (Utah), San Antonio (Texas), Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill (North Carolina), Manchester (New Hampshire), Kansas City (Missouri), Milwaukee (Wisconsin), Albany, Schenectady (New York). It’s interesting to see that the 12 cities are distributed uniformly and the total number of cities is now 35.

When do you think Google will add all the important cities from the US and the rest of the world? Shouldn’t Google outsource this job to other companies or at least accept photos from users and use technology like Photosynth to combine them?

Bonus question: can you find the formula for an integer sequence that has the first 5 values: 5, 4, 6, 8, 12?

Orkut Calling All Programmers. . .

Posted on February 12, 2008 by admin | No Comments

Google’s Orkut, one of the world’s largest social media Web sites now will allow its population to use third-party applications for games, music and other plug-in programs. Following Facebook’s lead, the new offering most likely will boost the fast-rising site’s world popularity.

Amar Gahdhi, Orkut group product manager, announced the move on his blog Monday, saying the company expects to raise its online population up to more than 50 million users in the next few weeks.

Google will accept applications from social media until Feb. 15 and unveil those chosen in late February. Google also will hold an “Orkut Hackathon” on Thursday and Friday at its Mountain View, Calif., headquarters.

Orkut was launched in January 2004 as a response to social media kingpin MySpace and burgeoning college social media Web site Facebook. Since then, MySpace has taken about 80 percent of the U.S. social media site while Facebook, which was the first to open its computer platform to developers last spring, now has 10 percent of the demographic.

Orkut, by contrast, has less than 1 percent of the U.S. market, but has exploded in other countries. In Brazil, where 50 percent of traffic goes to Orkut. Nearly 17 percent of the social media market in India also uses the social media program. Asia and Latin American users also are becoming Orkut hotshots.

Allowing third-party applications will continue this trend, said Chris Johnson, founder of Tempe-based programing company Terralever LLC. Terralever was the first programming firm allowed to develop applications for Facebook.

In the U.S., however, Orkut probably will remain behind the MySpace and Facebook behemoths, Johnson said.

“Orkut has such a small U.S. market base that I don’t think it’ll get much traction,” he said. “But it is one of the largest sites in the world, so that’s where you’ll see growth.”

Terralever does not have plans to develop applications for Orkut, although Johnson and thousands of others are waiting for what will be the Holy Grail of social media application development. Within moths, MySpace is expected to announce that users will be able to use applications that already have been submitted to the company.

A Million Recycle Bins

Posted on February 12, 2008 by admin | No Comments

This is a little trick I learned from paying atention to regedit…There;s some cool shit on there!

Just rename any folder with the extention .{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

LIKE_ Recycle.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Back when our schools network security was crap, I would give everyone a million recycle bins. Lots of fun!

also, if u go to regedit>HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/CLSID/{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}
U can change the name and icon of your recycle bin.
The icon must be a .ico file and it must be 32X32 pixels.

Have fun! :B):

I know how frustrating it is when you download a large file from the net to find out that it is locked with
a password, which you dont have. Cracking the password with softwares like Advanced password recovery
is out of the question bcoz it takes nearly 3 days to guess a 8 character long password. And noone can spend that
kinda time.

Today I am gonnal post a method to find out passwords for archive files which you downloaded from file sharers like -
Rapidshare, Megaupload ………

It is pretty easy, fast and doesnt require you to use any software other than a Browser.

What you need -
1. A browser (preferably Mozilla FireFox)
2. The file for which you are searching the password must be popular.

How to do it -

Lets assume that one wants to find password for this file –

Code:
http://rapidshare.de/files/5968004/Dead.To.Rights.2-RELOADED.part01.rar.html

In the Google Search toolbar in FireFox copy the name of the file, in this case – Dead.To.Rights.2-RELOADED.part01.rar ImageOr you can manually go to

Code:
http://www.google.com

and search in the default search box.

[Note that the full link to sites has been masked in order to preserve board policy]

By checkin the Actual Url one can see that /forum/index.php?showtopic=8927&view=findpost&p=119588
is a link to a topic in a forum, and hence by clicking on the link, we are taken to a forum page.

The forum is in some other language, but it doesnt matter. On scrolling down the page one can see
the links to the file for which we need the password. And most probably the password will posted at the end
of the link list, like this -Imageif it is not posted then you can try the other links or search in other search engines or you can even add ” ” to the keyword and then search.

Hope this small guide was helpful to you. Now you no longer need to ask others for the password to files.

Fool A Keylogger

Posted on February 12, 2008 by admin | No Comments

These days Agents spy on u everywhere, in college, at work, maybe a trojan virus on your home PC which keylogs your paswords and mails it to someone else. If u think u r being logged, try this:

Whenever u have to type a password, never type the complete password in one go, ie, if your password is WINDOWS, u should type NDOW, then move cursor to start of the password field using the mouse ONLY, then type WI, then move cursor to end using the mouse and type S. This way the logger will record your keystrokes as [ndowwis] instead of [WINDOWS].

Haha, keylogger fooled.
